The Tai Chi Class Cost Index (2026)
"How much does a tai chi class cost?" has a genuinely happy answer: tai chi is one of the most affordable movement practices around, and a large share of classes cost nothing at all. We read the prices that US tai chi studios publish themselves and rolled them into one honest index — with an upfront caveat about how few studios post a price in the first place. Updated 2026-07-19.
Read this first: a lot of tai chi is free.
The headline number, honestly
Of the studios that publish a price, a tai chi class runs about $20.
What you'll actually pay: the price bands
Among the 70 priced studios, here's how the published rates fall out. The low bands are per-class drop-ins; the $50+ band is mostly studios quoting a monthly rate. The takeaway isn't the exact figure — it's that paid tai chi rarely costs much, and free options sit below this table entirely.
| Price posted | Studios | Share of priced studios |
| Under $10 | 1 | |
| $10–14 | 14 | |
| $15–19 | 13 | |
| $20–29 | 22 | |
| $30–49 | 11 | |
| $50+ | 9 | |
The little we can say by state
An honest note on coverage: price is the hardest field to gather in tai chi, because most classes simply don't post one — and plenty are free. So far 70 studios across 29 states publish a rate — just 2.6% of the directory. That's a usable national ballpark but far too thin to rank states with confidence, so we show every state with at least 2 priced studios below and flag the small samples plainly. These rows will firm up as our crawl grows.
| State | Median price | Range | Studios sampled |
| Oregon | $112 | $35–$189 | 2 |
| Connecticut | $65 | $30–$99 | 2 |
| Ohio | $63 | $25–$100 | 2 |
| North Carolina | $43 | $20–$65 | 2 |
| Indiana | $33 | $25–$40 | 2 |
| Washington | $25 | $20–$35 | 5 |
| Wisconsin | $25 | $10–$30 | 3 |
| Pennsylvania | $23 | $15–$30 | 2 |
| Colorado | $21 | $12–$30 | 2 |
| New York | $20 | $13–$25 | 6 |
| Texas | $20 | $10–$135 | 4 |
| Florida | $20 | $15–$20 | 3 |
| New Jersey | $20 | $15–$25 | 2 |
| California | $17 | $8–$100 | 12 |
| Illinois | $15 | $10–$20 | 6 |
| New Mexico | $15 | $15–$15 | 2 |
Why tai chi prices spread so far
Two studios across town can post very different numbers, and none of it is worth over-thinking before your first class:
- Free, donation, or paid. The biggest divide isn't price — it's whether there's a price at all. Parks, senior centers, libraries, and community classes are often free or by donation, while dedicated studios charge a drop-in or monthly rate.
- Drop-in vs monthly. A single class ($8–$20 is typical) costs more per session than an unlimited monthly plan. If you'll go weekly, ask about a class pass or monthly rate before paying drop-in each time.
- Insurance & senior programs. If you're on Medicare Advantage, Silver Sneakers may cover classes entirely, and many Tai Chi for Arthritis programs run through low-cost community health partners.
