Certified instruction — reviews and the studio's own info point to a recognized tai chi program or lineage (think Tai Chi for Health / Dr. Paul Lam, the Taoist Tai Chi Society, or a named family-style teacher). If credentials matter to you, ask which program the instructor is certified in and which style they teach.

The classes they run
“I read countless reviews and descriptions of types of martial arts and schools that were more like cattle herders than one on one concentration.”
What students say
“They provide a very welcoming culture at the Academy so you feel comfortable.”
“Becoming a skilled martial artist strengthened Sam's confidence, focus and achievements in all aspects of his life.”
“We owe much of that to the folks at AMMA, who have created a complete kit for those interested in martial arts training: skills, philosophy and community.”
From the reviews
Not just another karate place where you learn to punch and kick ( although my kids like this very much). They take a whole body whole mind approach. Self awareness, focus and refocus, how to break out of holds ( stranger grabs them, how to get away),space awareness ( understand where you are, how far you can reach…
AMMA is much more than just a martial arts school. The instructors (mine is Christopher Boyer) demonstrate and instruct on the importance of mental state as the foundation of how we interact with the world - especially in high stress situations.
Christopher and Kristine are a true blessing. They provide a very welcoming culture at the Academy so you feel comfortable. This comfort along with their vast knowledge of martial arts, fitness and overall well-being is amazing.
When my 5 year old daughter decided to try martial arts I was not sure where to start looking. I read countless reviews and descriptions of types of martial arts and schools that were more like cattle herders than one on one concentration. I came across AMMA online and decided to give it a try.
Your first tai chi class at Academy of Modern Martial Arts
Nervous about walking into a tai chi class for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good instructors expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a gentle warm-up, then learning a few slow movements of the form, step by step — no pressure to get it perfect, and you can rest or sit whenever you need to. What to wear: loose, comfortable clothing you can move in, and flat, flexible shoes (some studios practice in socks or bare feet). What to bring: water, and that's about it — there's no equipment to buy. Arrive a few minutes early to say hello to the instructor and mention it's your first class. It comes together faster than you'd think — most people feel far more at ease by their second or third visit.
