From the reviews
I been a student here for several years, and It has been a transformative experience for me. I can't speak highly enough about the excellent and patient instruction from Sifu Jeff, and coaches Russell and William.
I joined the Portland Tai Chi Academy seven years ago. I was a little hesitant at first, since it was my first experience in a martial arts school. But I found all the two-person exercises to be the most enjoyable part of studying at here.
It's not that I was feeling disconnected (pandemic) from others, but rather a spark of inner growth, a connection within myself. Curiously, I googled Tai Chi, and found this Academy; happy I did. Kindness, Positive Energy, Knowledge, describes my (free) 1-hour, private lesson.
In a very short space of time, I have learned quite a few of the moves of the tai chi, not only from the instructors, but from fellow students who are asked and called upon to leave the class.
Your first tai chi class at Portland Tai Chi Academy
Nervous about walking into a tai chi class for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good instructors expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a gentle warm-up, then learning a few slow movements of the form, step by step — no pressure to get it perfect, and you can rest or sit whenever you need to. What to wear: loose, comfortable clothing you can move in, and flat, flexible shoes (some studios practice in socks or bare feet). What to bring: water, and that's about it — there's no equipment to buy. Arrive a few minutes early to say hello to the instructor and mention it's your first class. It comes together faster than you'd think — most people feel far more at ease by their second or third visit.
