Certified instruction — reviews and the studio's own info point to a recognized tai chi program or lineage (think Tai Chi for Health / Dr. Paul Lam, the Taoist Tai Chi Society, or a named family-style teacher). If credentials matter to you, ask which program the instructor is certified in and which style they teach.

What students say
“Joy Space - specifically Patricia Betts, is the most skilled , patient teacher I’ve ever had !”
From the reviews
I had never practiced yoga before; Patricia taught me how to perform all the poses with precision and care. Her practice is one of the best because she pays attention and considers your individuality with the practice. I can forever be so grateful!
Yoga with Patricia Jimenez-Betts-Banayan… Pat is a good teacher for every level of student…she seems to have a master plan, but one that can be altered as needed for the mix of students attending…very knowledgeable and tremendously competent a practitioner, she is able to explain clearly and plainly what she is…
Patricia’s ability to pull in a multitude of practices be that music, tai chi, childhood education, and others and reflect them all in whichever practice she is working with at that time is very insightful and engaging. Her skill and charisma helps the classes to flow flawlessly and excitingly.
Patricia is a wonderful yoga instructor. She is very knowledgeable and a great communicator. The energy at Joyspace is always warm and welcoming. I would highly recommend taking a class. You will leave feeling better then when you came. I always do!
Your first tai chi class at Joyspace Movement Lab Yoga & Kindermusik
Nervous about walking into a tai chi class for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good instructors expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a gentle warm-up, then learning a few slow movements of the form, step by step — no pressure to get it perfect, and you can rest or sit whenever you need to. What to wear: loose, comfortable clothing you can move in, and flat, flexible shoes (some studios practice in socks or bare feet). What to bring: water, and that's about it — there's no equipment to buy. Arrive a few minutes early to say hello to the instructor and mention it's your first class. It comes together faster than you'd think — most people feel far more at ease by their second or third visit.
