From the reviews
to first understand SYSTEMA you have to know what SYSTEMA is: it is not a "fighting system," e.g., muy thai, kickboxing, brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo... all those you will learn how to attack, offensively.
A very different and practical martial art taught by one of the best. Systema is something you can do at any stage of your life. It is all about breathing, movement, awareness, connection and function. Good for the body and the mind. And the Tai Chi instruction is exceptional.
I'm an out of town visitor and Gene made me feel at ease and welcome in his class! He's friendly, gentle, and inclusive. He has an very deep understanding of human anatomy and how breathing affects minute changes in the body. In 5 minutes, he taught me several ways to dramatically improve my pushups.
I feel fortunate to get to train with Gene and everyone at Austin Systema & Tai Chi. If you are considering it, I recommend coming and checking out a class in person, it is a very relaxed and welcoming environment.
Your first tai chi class at Austin Systema & Tai Chi Chuan
Nervous about walking into a tai chi class for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good instructors expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a gentle warm-up, then learning a few slow movements of the form, step by step — no pressure to get it perfect, and you can rest or sit whenever you need to. What to wear: loose, comfortable clothing you can move in, and flat, flexible shoes (some studios practice in socks or bare feet). What to bring: water, and that's about it — there's no equipment to buy. Arrive a few minutes early to say hello to the instructor and mention it's your first class. It comes together faster than you'd think — most people feel far more at ease by their second or third visit.
